Want a friend, just ask or be one first!

I was doing some studying about People, my Leadership work, Relations in the Workplace, etc.

I wanted to share a little that I read (below). It made me think of these life experiences first of all:

Who do you want as your friend?
We asked others to be their friend in kindergarten? We asked someone we wanted to go out with us, be our special friend, in our growing up years? We now these days even on that Facebook-thing, we ask others to be our friend/to enter into a friendship of some sort.

Humans may ignore you or choose not to be your friend, we have all had that happen huh?
(like here on Facebook, which seems strange to say I do not want to be someone's friend?!?)...

The ultimate #1 relationship we can seek in my opinion is that with God, with Jesus. And also I am pretty sure, HE (unlike we humans) never says no!

Jesus said, “If you, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask Him?” (Luke 11:13).

God is not going to force something on you that you do not want. There has to be that desire. God will not violate your free will. He has given you a free will. If He would violate it, then there is really no free will. So you must ask the Lord for the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Throughout the Bible we are told to ask. Jesus, in the Sermon on the Mount said, “Your heavenly Father knows what you have need of before you ask Him” (Matthew 6:8).

And then later on in the sermon He said, “Now ask and you shall receive. Seek and you shall find. Knock and it shall be opened” (Matthew 7:7).

...We must initiate. We must ask. We must seek.

...So God has many things for us; however, we must ask.

Just sharing some studying I was into; wonder how this ties into Leadership Development, Workplace Relationships, etc?

I am thinking that if THAT relationship is solid with HIM, all of these relations down here will be better...?

Glad you are my friend, and really glad HE is mine as well, BOOKER

Is it about YOU or THEM?

When life is at its VERY BEST, I am focused on others - outside of ME! Several things have brought this to light lately, some things that made me go hmmmmm:

So many things come to mind, to include a dynamic that really amazes me about PEOPLE. Have you ever walked just next to someone, right by them, passing them and said HELLO and they just totally did not respond? Now stranger or not, when someone says HELLO, how could you not respond?
WhatsUpWithThatAnyway? BTW, if I ever do that to you, plz grab me and shake me, I am getting ready to walk into traffic unknowingly!

...The absolute worst times in my life have been when I was focused inwardly; my issues and concerns. My self worth seems best when I am/can be focused on OTHERS struggles...

...How abou the customer service rep, waiter/waitress sharing his/her excuses/woes vs taking care of the customer?

....Are we not soooooo much better at judging others than ourselves!?! Does this fit here?

...Heard a radio show about some of the latest thinking on kids receiving constant praising and how it can actually be a very damaging thing. Teaches that everything is about ME, I, ...THEM!

...All this must tie into this whole VICTIMIZATION society we now live within, huh?

...Reminds me of my days as a military commander and how it was a principle when we were eating a meal out in the field - the soldiers ate first.

....When the elevator opens do we rush in or wait for others to come out? When we are in a discussion or argument, do we listen first?

...If you are a leader having to make a decision, do you see what THEY think first?

I am guessing before long, we will see people walking around and without being asked anything, they will just be saying I AM FINE. ME ME ME...

I am still working on that whole ignoring someone when they have just said HELLO?!!? Maybe it is just me, but do you have to know someone to return a greeting or even initiate it?

People are amazing, you gotta love US,...oops, I mean THEM! Gods best this day my friend and HELLO!?????????????????????

Law of the Garbage Truck

LAW OF THE GARBAGE TRUCK ...

One day I hopped in a taxi and we took off for the airport
We were driving in the right lane when suddenly a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us.
My taxi driver slammed on his brakes, skidded, and missed the other car by just inches!
The driver of the other car whipped his head around and started yelling at us.
My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy.
And I mean, he was really friendly.
So I asked, 'Why did you just do that?
This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!'
This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call,
'The Law of the Garbage Truck.'
He explained that many people are like garbage trucks.
They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment.
As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they'll dump it on you.
Don't take it personally.
Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on.
Don't take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets.
The bottom line is that successful people do not let garbage trucks take over their day.
Life's too short to wake up in the morning with regrets,
so ... Love the people who treat you right.
Pray for the ones who don't.

Life is ten percent what you make it and ninety percent how you take it!

Have a garbage-free day!

Job in Lex, MO

The Health Care Collaborative of Rural Missouri in Lexington, MO has an opening for a part-time office assistant.
Candidates must be proficient in Microsoft Office, have the ability to work between the hours of 8:30-4:30 (M-F) and be willing to work in a fast paced office environment.
Qualified candidates should call Laurie Lichte at 660.259.2440 or submit a resume to laurie@hccnetwork.org

It is beginning to look a lot like

I was just remembering back just after Christmas, and how awesome it would be if we could keep the CHRISTMAS SPIRIT all year long. The same could be said for the spirit of folks at Easter time.

There is so much GOODness, PEACEfulness, LOVing, GIVEing, KINDness, SMILES, FOCUS on the RIGHT STUFF...in people's hearts at these times.

For all of us, our challenge is to keep a heart of CHRISTMAS & EASTER all the time maybe? Even on Mondays huh?

Sooooooo go HELP someone, GIVE someone something, FORGIVE them, ACCEPT 'em the way they are, ...that would be a great start! Especially for a Monday huh?

It does not mean that plenty of people, us and others are not hurting in various ways for sure. Whether it is our own hurts/pains or those of others, the right kind of spirit and mindset can be of help.

I am re-sharing something I read the other day down below...

My God's best to you and yours as we head toward Christmas-time!

Leadership VISION, real understandable, relate-able VISION, that all were part of creating, ..is rarely in place on most teams, organizations, churches even... I believe it is because a Leader(s) at the top created it but didn't know how to involve/sell it to ALL. The first thing I would recommend in any real VISIONING effort would be to stop using the word VISION! Too many people see it as a useless management exercise, instead of...

support bicycling & walking...

Thursday, March 22nd (tomorrow!) members of the Missouri delegation to the National Bike Summit will be visiting the office of each of member of Congress from Missouri.

Would you take a few minutes to contact each of your own members of Congress today and ask each one to support bicycling and walking?

The House of Representatives is vitally important right now, because the House version of the federal transportation completely eliminates funding for bicycling and walking--funding that has helped Missouri turn the corner over the past 20 years in becoming friendly and safer for biking and walking.

It's easy--just four steps:

1. Look up your members of congress below (2 Senators and 1 Representative)

2. Email or (better) call their office with this message:

Please support dedicated funding bicycling and walking in the federal transportation bill. It very inexpensive, very cost-effective, and is very important to me (give an example or two explaining why). I support the message of the Missouri delegation to the National Bike Summit who will be visiting your office tomorrow.

Some FRIDAY thinking

If you are anywhere near my point in life – life begins to be much more about our philosophy, purpose and value of/in this life. It does for me anyway.
What is my purpose, what have I done, what could I still do, what do I want to have as my legacy? What will I be remembered for…

In working with a group of senior/exec leaders currently; this is something I am challenging us with – what are we (you) about?
What are our Principles, Values, Focus, Vision, etc –personally, as well as for those you lead if you are a leader of others?

If you are like me, it is probably some pretty mushy stuff in your head. Try writing it down; betting you will find it interesting and maybe even difficult.

Who are you, who am I? Am I being what I want to be (ponder that one for a moment)? How do you know how others see you? Do you care? What is my guide for what I should be?

Leaders sometimes find coaches or mentors to help with this. For all of us personally, how do you grow yourself, continue to challenge yourself, get where we want to get to? Where is THAT PLACE by the way?

Just thinking, cuz again that is what we do when we hit this point in life...
So what will be your legacy or is it still undecided? Will it be about past stuff screwed up, or stuff still to happen? We may have one day left or many years left, what is yet to be done?
So maybe this is the main point here (you were hoping I would get to it huh?):

You have heard it before and we know it to be true: It won’t be about STUFF, but will be about others, relationships, and those you have HELPed, FORGIVEn, & LOVEd.
…and oh yeah, those you/we have NOT helped, forgiven or loved!

Maybe you are still pretty young?! Why wait to get focused on the Right Stuff?

Chasing the dream – trying now, these days, to do what I believe is God’s purpose for me …helping others. And yes, I said TRYING.
Anyway I can help you?

Have an amazing day! Booker

Transparency or Pride

In conversation with a biz leader yesterday - the concept of being TRANSPARENT was raised.

Leaders being transparent is a popular concept in some leadership/management circles. I believe it to be one of the top 2-3 most important Leader Qualities; many leaders would not agree.

After all, for any important person or relationship in our life, do we not want the other person to be REAL? Think about this: Any relationship that is not a good & important relationship is likely because one or both of the parties are not being transparent.

When a relationship is good, right and true, we KNOW that person; they KNOW us. Why can we not see/understand this as humans …and as leaders? Something to do with the Power of Relationship huh?

When I am real; when I share my concerns, flaws, weaknesses and issues - I have strengthened our relationship (not weakened it, as some unknowing people/managers like to believe).

Instead people (not you and me mind ya) tend to be prideful, be someone we are not, put on airs, act as if everything is fine, what you did or said did not bother me… I have no problems, it is all good, I better not let you in, because you might learn I have flaws... You are perfect, never make mistakes, and cannot admit you were wrong…

I would just challenge all of us to consider the people in our lives where the relationship is truly meaningful. What makes them or that relationship meaningful?

It is on some level about the transparency you have with that person.

Leaders: please know that no one really believes you are this studly, perfect, do not need any help, possess no problems, you are all-knowing / master of all, with everything in life being awesome. Be real with people and they will be real with you. There was after all only one Perfect One.

I have struggled with this dynamic in becoming more and more transparent about my faith, God, & Jesus; and letting that be part of who I am wherever I am, and always...

Is it too late to become transparent in some relationships in our lives? In my new / future relationships I intend to try and be more transparent from the beginning! (For leaders, how about considering this the next time you take over a leadership role, from the start?)

Something about all this made me think of THE EIGHT BEATITUDES OF JESUS, Matthew 5:3-10

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are they who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.

Blessed are the pure of heart, for they shall see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.

Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."

Our struggles with Others

Maybe at work, maybe in school, maybe at church, anywhere - we find ourselves struggling to get along with others. It is inevitable because others are flawed, ...just like you and me.

Next time you are in that situation, cut them some slack - they probably have come from dysfunction in their lives ...just like you and me.

It is a challenge more and more as time moves along, that family & society become a worse & worse model for all of us. That person we are struggling with has likely had those bad models, ..just like you and me.

Playing together, working together, arguing together (w/out coming out as enemies), communicating with others, etc - these are interpersonal life skills & dynamics that most of us just do not necessarily possess anymore.

We did not get all that stuff at home, within our families, in the classroom, in past work experiences, etc?! So where do assume people should get this stuff these days? We are all different anyway and then you throw in lifelong dysfunction that so many have come from...

On top of all that, time has moved along, & we now have people in Leadership & Management roles that also never learned interpersonal, life or team-skills at home; and they are the ones to be leading & teaching others, yikes!

Well anyway, this is not about accepting & overlooking them (or you and I) as victims, but just to trying to understand. Realize that they do not necessarily know how to play well with others, ...yeah again, just possibly like you & me!

"People don't care how much you know until first they know how much you care."

DIVERSITY even in the Weather

Sitting here watching snow fall in KC when last evening I was sitting in shorts on deck in 70degree temps.

Now that's diversity for sure.

That same Diversity dynamic is just what makes the world go round and so interesting. The differences around the world, in our different worlds, our workplace, the people around us, between you and everyone else you know?

A strength for sure if & when we can figure out how to make all the differences blend & work together for something special... something even better!

I can tell you in my teaching and consulting, diversity sure plays out in every team, every leader and every class I teach. Wow, you should have seen the diversity of thinking, ideas, opinions and logic ...trying to happen with a group I was challenging the other day! The struggles they were demonstrating made it evident just why & how companies are challenged with that TEAM thing. Not to mention how diversity affects every personal relationship in our lives - so I won't mention it or go there just now :)

So anyway, try to appreciate the diversity around you today, the uniqueness of others, how strange and different YOU are & how you fit in?!?
... and how it all together can be a good thing, at least at times when the blending is happening well!

Let it snow Let it snow Let it snow! Not really, I am already ready for diversity again Mother Nature, ...how about those 70degrees again?

God is amazing huh? Booker

Thankfulness

“We have graces from God and His mercies are new every morning” Lamentations 3:22-23

I am closer to understanding the value of getting up in the morning and thanking God; being thankful for the blessings I do have.

....and praising the Lord for another day.

[read something like that today, and it also suggested that you must be maybe 40 / 50 years of age to truly get it] ...I don't know about that.

Have a good one, ME

Leaders should help others with NOT WORRYing

Conversations recently with biz leaders whose organization(s) were in uncertain times, potential layoffs, mergers, etc - it reminded me of how critical LEADERSHIP is, once again.

NOT WORRYING is a tough concept for all of us, no matter who you are! Leaders have to (and must) deal with this personally as well as for those they lead! In these challenging times with so much hopelessness, bad economy, job loss, organization struggling, disasters here and there, betrayals, people being laid off – WHO or WHAT is next?

It is nearly a daily occurrence to hear from someone close in our lives who has been impacted. It is everywhere, and we’re not supposed to worry?!? Indeed, this is one of the tougher biblical principles we are supposed to follow… YIKES, no DOUBLE YIKES.

As leaders we are really needed by those we lead. As much as we may want to focus & dwell on our own worries, stresses, etc -- your folks need you & your leadership! A few points to share as I have been pondering this much lately:

Be ‘human’ and donot be afraid of letting them see it. When we let others IN, we build trust & strong relationships. Some believe this shows weakness as a leader – that is just wrong. The relationships in our lives makes these times much more palatable – especially when one of those relationships is YOU, their boss!

When we all get thru these times (and we will unless we do not?!?)…and things turn around - this trusting relationship you built WITH THEM will pay huge dividends.

Working relationships between co-workers can become very strained as individuals withdrawal, lack concentration, and/or lash out at others. Leaders should not avoid it or try to pretend it is not there. It is real and everyone feels it. Why not get it out for all to know and realize we are all dealing with it and we (the leader and the rest of the team) are there for each other. It needs to be be dealt with, exposed and curtailed before it gets out of hand. Although we can never be sure of our security (of our jobs) and those that we lead, we need to reassure our people as much as possible; & with the truth as we know it! Yes, they should know what YOU KNOW.

Leaders are often confided in and the suggestion is there to keep it at the upper levels. REAL LEADERS realize this is wrong and unfair. The ones below that you are entrusted with, are trusting you with their lives...

"…Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear… Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?... O ye of little faith?... Your Heavenly Father knows what you need. Seek first His kingdom & righteousness and all these things will be given to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow” MATTHEW 6:25-34

QUALITIES TO MAKE US BETTER

For Leaders (as well as people in general), I came across a 'very good source' which provided a great foundation for what we should all be about in successfully relating to/in this world:

*OTHER-focused
*UN-threatening, not capable of DECEIVING
*PRIDE/EGO (confident but not boastful)

MAKE IT RIGHT WHEN & WHERE U CAN

I was just thinking on some stuff. You know it is the people around you (family, co-workers, friends, neighbors, church friends, your boss, etc) make your life and mine, either good or bad.

Nothing else even comes close to being the biggest contributing factor to the quality of our world and life.

It gets so hard when a people issue, a relationship problem is going on in my world. For me, God & that Faith is the only way to get Real Peace & Comfort with struggles when they arise. Making Him my #1 Relationship priority in my life is what fixed so much for me about this world and all us humans here!

However when we walk out any door on this earth, it is those people that can/will make the difference in your day, the current moment, future times, tomorrow, later today, etc.

It only makes sense then to surround ourselves with good folks where possible. With the rest that we maybe don't get to choose - make those relationships as right & good as possible.

Whatever you have to do. Allowing bad relations to exist day after day after day, has to be the best possible definition of INSANITY. We've all been there done that & it just makes LIFE so tough, stressful, tense, negative and on and on and on...

It’s not about a personality conflict, not about communication issues or any other symptom/excuse; it is about a poor relationship that needs fixing. At least 99% of the time it is anyway – now that’s just my opinion.

For me, in as many moments as I can remember to look skyward, I seek that Real Peace thru Him in a constant & continual conversation.

That soooooo works for me; but then down here again we go fixing, improving and making new relationships to make this ol’ earth better. Him then us, ..Him then us again...

That quality relationship with our Savior makes the earthly struggles just seem to not be so insane. I can make so much more sense of it all when I go there to Him.

Man, am I blessed. All good here - here's to GOOD MOMENTS wherever you go my friend,

KC location for Workshops

For my Kansas City/area friends:
I am looking for a restaurant/pub/food establishment to do some Small Group Leadership workshops.

Some content will include GOD/FAITH, so hoping to find a location/ownership that is Christian-oriented - with a heart in that direction!

Please let me know if you know of a place or someone to contact; anywhere in KC area, North, South or otherwise...

Thanks, Booker 913.232.0244 / doug@bookertraining.com

It is about the AUTHOR, not the BOOK...?

"...I'M JUST SAYIN'

YOUR COMMUNICATION ISSUES ARE ABOUT RELATIONSHIP...

Speaking with a great friend, client & senior leader, a very interesting discussion developed further validating the statement above ...which I have come to believe is true maybe 99% of the time.

The discussion was about input he had received about his leadership after seeking evaluation/input by those he leads. Now that's courageous to begin with, and for sure he received some interesting feedback (some that he didn't expect and some that will take further discussions to get clarified).

One of the areas where he received less than satisfactory marks, was in COMMUNICATION. If you met this individual, you would find it hard to believe that he could be 'marked down' in communicating. He is an awesome speaker, coach, mentor, listener and people seek out his counsel.

The fact that he is a great friend provides some clue to his being 'marked down' by his subordinate leaders in this category. You see, I would never see him as being an ineffective communicator ...because I have a great RELATIONSHIP with him.

After some honest reflection and thinking about the relationships of those assessing him, he saw that this was likely what this was about: - what they were really saying was the RELATIONSHIP(s) was less than satisfactory.

Think about those you have communication issues with; it's really a relationship issue, is it not?

Some GODLY application to this: It strikes me that all this is the same challenge we face when we struggle in our communication with God. As I really think about this, I think back to when I didn't know Jesus, ...the bible and most everything in it made little sense to me. The bible and His Word only began making sense and becoming clear to me AFTER HE became my friend. The closer and closer I get to Him, and as my relationship, trust and faith in/with Him becomes stronger, the more I understand about what He is saying to me.

The dynamics of these thoughts came out in Sunday School last week. After I tossed in some of this and made the statement that its not so much a matter of the content of The Book, it is first of all about the relationship with our God and Jesus. If the relationship is good, the communication will be good. A friend then tossed in this gem, something like, "...it's about the Author, not the Book".

How's that relationship with Him?

God's best to you and yours my friend,

Booker

Some GOOD in this world

A good friend shared this with me today, thanks Mike!

With all the world's troubles & as we begin a new year, a great reminder of 'GOOD' in the world
(heard about this but never watched the short video):

http://ping.fm/asRxj

Hope you FIND it in 2012

Sincerely hope this year brings better, bigger & brighter blessings to your life in 2012!

>Maybe more than anything, find Peace...

>Maybe try that new thing or finish old things...

>Maybe make relationships right that need it...

Interesting scripture I came across that is pretty fitting for some new dynamics I am finding myself pursuing:
(Isaiah 43:19) For I am about to do something new. See, I have already begun! Do you not see it? I will make a pathway through the wilderness. I will create rivers in the dry wasteland.

Happy New Year friend, Booker
(hope your football team wins if you are into that Bowl thing - GO CATS!)
