OK to forget about Santa, but not...

As this holiday season was approaching, I had lots of thoughts about how people might view both God and Santa Clause in similar ways. People place hope, wishes, expectations, prayers and have good feelings toward both huh? I intended to write about all that, but did not get that done. However I did want to share some thoughts now AFTER Christmas.

These thoughts are still about the parallel worlds and thinking regarding Jesus and Santa. It strikes me how much focus builds up about both as we head into that magical time of year, and the 25th.

We focus on Santa and all that we hope he brings us and we do somewhat the same with Jesus; along with thinking of His birth, the babe in the manager, 3 Wise men, and all that goes with the birth of our Savior.

An exciting time of the year for sure. I hope this just serves as a good reminder for all of us.

People forget about Santa, allowing his memories to fade into wherever until this time next year, right? We might tend to do the same for the baby Jesus, but we cannot and should not, so DO NOT.

Yes He is the Reason for the Season, but also for every season! Keep Him uppermost in your thoughts, prayers, thinking, wishes, hopes, expectations, etc every day of the year, all year.

Hopefully when we thanked Santa, that we REALLY thanked God!

We head toward 2011, the first year of a new decade. Remember that our constant prayers, hopes and expectations, wants and needs need to be placed in that baby in the manager, our Savior, every day, every season. A relationship with Him is necessary ALL year round.

I gotta go do some praying! God's best to you my friend and Merry Christmas

The true story of Rudolph

This was shared with me, just passing on :) If it is not true, you go disprove, I would just assume believe it. That is just me though:

A man named Bob May, depressed and brokenhearted, stared out his drafty apartment window into the chilling December night.

His 4-year-old daughter Barbara sat on his lap quietly sobbing. Bobs wife, Evelyn, was dying of cancer Little Barbara could not understand why her mommy could never come home. Barbara looked up into her dads eyes and asked, Why is Mommy not just like everybodys Mommy? Bobs jaw tightened and his eyes welled with tears. Her question brought waves of grief, but also of anger. It had been the story of Bobs life. Life always had to be different for Bob.

Small when he was a kid, Bob was often bullied by other boys. He was too little at the time to compete in sports. He was often called names he would rather not remember. From childhood, Bob was different and never seemed to fit in. Bob did complete college, married his loving wife and was grateful to get his job as a copywriter at Montgomery Ward during the Great Depression. Then he was blessed with his little girl. But it was all short-lived. Evelyns bout with cancer stripped them of all their savings and now Bob and his daughter were forced to live in a two-room apartment in the Chicago slums. Evelyn died just days before Christmas in 1938.

Bob struggled to give hope to his child, for whom he couldn't even afford to buy a Christmas gift. But if he could not buy a gift, he was determined to make one - a storybook! Bob had created an animal character in his own mind and told the animals story to little Barbara to give her comfort and hope. Again and again Bob told the story, embellishing it more with each telling. Who was the character? What was the story all about? The story Bob May created was his own autobiography in fable form. The character he created was a misfit outcast like he was. The name of the character? A little reindeer named Rudolph, with a big shiny nose. Bob finished the book just in time to give it to his little girl on Christmas Day. But the story does not end there.

The general manager of Montgomery Ward caught wind of the little storybook and offered Bob May a nominal fee to purchase the rights to print the book. Wards went on to print, Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer and distribute it to children visiting Santa Claus in their stores. By 1946 Wards had printed and distributed more than six million copies of Rudolph. That same year, a major publisher wanted to purchase the rights from Wards to print an updated version of the book.

In an unprecedented gesture of kindness, the CEO of Wards returned all rights back to Bob May. The book became a best seller. Many toy and marketing deals followed and Bob May, now remarried with a growing family, became wealthy from the story he created to comfort his grieving daughter. But the story does not end there either.

Bob's brother-in-law, Johnny Marks, made a song adaptation to Rudolph. Though the song was turned down by such popular vocalists as Bing Crosby and Dinah Shore, it was recorded by the singing cowboy, Gene Autry. Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer was released in 1949 and became a phenomenal success, selling more records than any other Christmas song, with the exception of White Christmas.

The gift of love that Bob May created for his daughter so long ago kept on returning back to bless him again and again. And Bob May learned the lesson, just like his dear friend Rudolph, that being different is not so bad. In fact, being different can be a blessing.

MERRY CHRISTMAS and Gods very best to you my friend. This has me thinking of a blog about Jesus and Santa, maybe, mmmmmmm BOOKER

WAY TOO BLESSED, have a day of smiles this day!

Way too blessed is what has been on my mind lately; when I think of it, I have much about which to smile. I have my struggles, as we all do. My wife’s health is not good, and we’ll sure take your prayers in that regard. The economy still affects business and making a living no doubt. At the same time, I have good family, a roof overhead, plenty to eat daily, good friends, work and people to teach; and we are keeping pretty warm even. Thank you Lord and please be with all those without what I do have – those in need.

As I ponder this, I thought of my world in dealing with business, leaders, management and leadership. As I sought to make a connection, it struck me that leaders should be conscious of this way too blessed thing as well.

They are blessed not only with whatever blessings in their personal life, but also of the opportunity and privilege to lead people. They have been given the reigns to make decisions for and about those they lead. Leaders should realize that being able to serve those they have been entrusted with is indeed a noble calling. Those who are led well and effectively surely know they are blessed.

If you are a leader, you have been given the opportunity to care for people. They are depending on your leadership to make their world at work, a whole bunch of their lives as good as possible. They are there for you to support, respect, build, grow and develop; and oh yeah you need them.

In finishing up the book I am writing, I was into some critical thinking regarding the relationship between leader and follower(s). Just think how much is dependent on you, the leader to make that world enjoyable, productive and for you to create an environment; one where people can bless you through their work and efforts?

Leaders should be thankful they are way too blessed and remain very aware that that they too are way too blessed. Leaders need to be careful not to take those people for granted; your blessed world counts on them! When the leaders make their world as good as possible, many more blessings will come their way. If those relationships and those people who maybe aren’t so blessed are ignored, well you may soon learn how blessed you used to be. Realize this maybe even selfishly, that by taking care of them, you are taking care of YOU.

Yes I am personally blessed again this Christmas, our last of this decade. Likely I am more blessed than I deserve. It is my wish and hope I can bless some people around me or that I encounter during this holiday season. I hope you will look for some to bless as well. If you lead folks, probably right there on that team you lead is a good place to begin that search.

Bless you and I hope you and yours find those tidings of great joy!

Booker, Book and Working Together?!?

I have a project to be tied to doing some conferences; along with opportunities in training, consulting, speaking, etc. I am in need of some other players on the team! It has been a dream of mine to have something like this - where I can involve friends, associates, former students, educators and other connections/relationships from my life. If you have time; if you could see us working together; and/or you have any interest, please contact me. For relationships not in my geographical area (KC), this could indeed involve you, wherever you might reside.

Skills, knowledge and expertise wanted/needed: Leadership/Management, Communications, Parenting, Faith & Church leadership, Book graphics, Org Development, People-development, Marketing, Training, Women in Leadership, Conferencing, etc.

The book behind all of this will be out by first of 2011; if you would just like to be kept posted on the book, let me know that as well. My first two books will play into this as well. More on all soon, this has very exciting potential for many reasons. If it seems to fit for you, I look forward to hearing from you.

RELATE FIRST, ASK SECOND

Recently, I have become hugely interested between the relationships & parallels between my faith and the dynamics of leadership & relationships. One of these hit me yesterday listening to a radio talk show. I hope you find something useful and relevant here. Either way, I always welcome your reactions, thinking, argument, etc!

I frequently share with leaders in coaching, consulting or in academic management courses, about the value of establishing relationship(s) quickly and early on - before you need someone. As the new one (whether manager or employee), it just makes sense that while you are learning the ropes of the company and business, what better time to be making strong relationships? The fact is, we will NEED something from them; be ASKING for something; want their HELP; or be in CONFLICT with them sooner or later!

This is why it is so critical to have a relationship BEFORE you need them, right? Doesn’t that make sense? Yet so often people just start functioning around someone, or manage them without focusing on IT until IT is the problem – the undeveloped relationship!
It struck me listening to this Christian talk show and driving down the road how ludicrous this is, that we do this. I was trying to think of some parallels or analogies, and the simplest one came to mind. When we are asking someone for help or for something, whether this is your employee, your co-worker, or maybe even God! wouldn’t it be easier if you had a relationship? I thought of someone in need of something, let that be YOU. Now would you go out and seek someone you know or just find the first stranger walking down the street to seek help from?

This lady was calling in to the talk show, asking about how she didn’t feel like she was connecting to God when she prayed for stuff. The host made the point, that just as in our human relationships; we need to spend the quality time up front. Get to know HIM; get to know your employee or co-worker, etc. He drew the parallel also of the parent and kid, and what if there was no love there; just a kid asking unceasingly for stuff all the time without the loving relationship in place?
Well, I could go on and on here - but I guess you probably see the point here. Whether it is about our most important relationship in life, that one with our God, Jesus Christ or with other humans – nurture the relationship first! Reminds me of the quote

EFFECTIVE LEADERS REALIZE YOU GET THE HEART BEFORE ASKING FOR THE HAND!

A scripture that has some connection: Luke 13:22 - 27 (not the most obvious scripture, you may have to think a bit to see the relationship. But hey, thinking is a good thing, huh?)

Pray when you don’t need anything. Have a cup of coffee with others when/before you need anything!
